Successful tour and solar eclipse in Mongolia

On August 1 2008 we have observed a total solar eclipse from the 'wild' West of Mongolia. It was the fourth successful eclipse tour (100% score). We traveled with 2 small groups of 12 people each to Ulan Bator the capital of Mongolia. From there we flew West to Altai. From there we traveled with a slow pace to enjoy the awesome landscapes of Mongolia. On average we traveled 80 km per day in 4x4 vans. The landscapes we crossed ranged from high mountains to seemingly endless plains. Roads are unpaved and camping was done on the most beautiful spots we encountered. We encountered much wildlife from small rodents to Thaki horses. Also the birdlife was abundant with many small birds like wheatears and desert finches and many raptors like black-eared kited. Also the gorgeous Lammergeier and the Mongolian national bird the Golden Eagle were seen. We met many nomadic people who were extremely hostpital. They offered us tea and local traditional food. Obviously the solar eclipse was the highlight of the trip. We have celabrated this succes with a tasty BBQ and Mongolian beer next to a camp fire around which we danced and enjoyed the bright night sky. As almost every night was very clear the milky way and many many stars could be seen very clearly. Everything together made this tour again a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

New website launched

After being out of photography for almost two years, I decided I wanted to celabrate my return into photography not only with new images, but also with a new website design. The old website worked for almost four years with a PHP script which meant hardly any maintenance. With this site I abandoned PHP and use good old html and javascript. For the galleries and the news section I acquired highslide.js which works perfect in combination of the image maps I have created. The images can be viewed in a larger format if you click on the thumbnails. It is worth to view the galleries using the slide show (automatic or by clicking) as sometimes I hide images in there which are not seen elsewhere. As this is a completely redesigned website, I have not all the images of the old site online yet. It will take some time before all galleries are filled again. I will add both older as brand new images on a regular basis. Also new is the other gallery. Here I show other kinds of protography than nature photography. Especially the music/concert photography I enjoy very much at the moment. But keep posted for more variation. Have fun browsing.

Back into photography; PhD in the pocket

Finally I'm back. You might have wondered why I did not upload any new work for the last two years. One of the main reasons was the huge work load I had in order to finish my PhD and publish this work in my first book: Non-thermal X-ray emission from Anomalous X-ray Pulsars. On May 21 2008 I defended this work in public before a panel of professors at the University of Amsterdam. After the defence they awarded me with the title of doctor. In August it was finally time to get my gear together again and do some nature photography. The destination was Mongolia with a total solar eclipse as bonus.
